Catherine LaValley, vice chairperson of Neighborhood Planning Council (NPC) 5, told the commission the NPC's storm siren did not activate on recent weekly tests and that residents near the siren "have not heard it at all" during outdoor and indoor situations on several first-Saturday tests. She requested a reliable solution because of recent severe weather.
Commissioner Lacoste thanked LaValley for raising the issue, said the problem had been under review for two years by staff and warned there may be confusion about the siren's intended reach: "it's not really meant for in home, you know, use. It's to warn people that are outdoors," she said, while adding staff will seek to resolve the problem. Mayor Behnke said the city manager would respond promptly to the concern.
The commission did not take immediate policy action at the meeting but committed to a staff response and follow-up.
