Superintendent reports low insurance increase, ribbon-cutting and school construction progress

Superintendent Thomas told the board the district's insurance-trust renewal came in with a 1.5% increase, which the district will split roughly 50/50 with employees.
"We've had really, really good rate increases the last couple years, and market's trending towards double digits. So feel really good about that... we split the increase 50 50," he said. Thomas said that equates to about a 0.75% increase for teachers and a similar share paid by the district.
Thomas also announced a ribbon-cutting at 6:00 p.m. on July 21 for the Learn to Work program at Lakeland (a partnership with Lakeland and Westview) and invited board members to attend. He provided progress reports on ongoing projects: electrical maintenance at Lakeland is largely finished, middle-school carpet is nearly complete, playgrounds are about 90% done, roofers have started work at the elementary and middle schools, and the high-school renovation is behind schedule with demolition ongoing but lights and ceiling grid installed. He said the district expects classrooms to be usable when school starts in three weeks and offered to show board members work after the meeting.
The board acknowledged the updates; no votes were required on the items in the superintendent's report.
