County adopts 2026–27 budget, includes 3% employee pay increase and purchase of sheriff vehicles

The Coffee County Board of Commissioners unanimously adopted Resolution 2026-14, the appropriation for fiscal year 07/01/2026–06/30/2027. The Budget and Finance Committee presented the budget with a positive recommendation and the board approved the measure with 16 yes votes.
Commissioner Morris, chair of Budget and Finance, highlighted that the budget carries a 3% increase for county employees and that $325,000 from a fund balance will be used to buy five sheriff’s department cars. He said department heads will decide how to distribute the 3% within their departments but that no department head may take more than 3%. "The 3% raise, each department head is going to decide... no department head can take more than 3%," Morris said. He added that the plan for the vehicles comes from fund balance and is not expected to sink that balance.
Commissioners also noted they did not adopt a tax increase; Morris said the county’s rural tax levy would be reduced (see separate item). The budget discussion included a brief reminder that department-level raise decisions will be filed with the mayor’s office and be available for public inspection.
The meeting record does not list departmental distributions, effective dates for raises, or additional implementing instructions beyond the requirement that department heads submit allocation information to the mayor’s office within a month.
