Board approves study to explore high-school culinary classroom renovation after ventilation concern

The Prairie Heights board authorized staff to explore renovations to the high-school culinary classroom after the district was notified by the fire marshal that the room's cooktop ventilation must be routed outside and brought up to code.
"The fire marshal kinda dinged us on the ventilation system for our cooktops... they need to be vented outside," Superintendent Thomas said, adding that the district will need an architect to produce plans and cost estimates. He emphasized the classroom and equipment are outdated and that the district cannot make the code changes without professional involvement.
Board members asked about estimated costs and timelines; Superintendent Thomas said no estimates were available at the time and that the immediate constraint is that the affected equipment cannot be used until corrected. The board voted 5–0 to approve exploration of renovation options and directed staff to return with proposals and cost information.
The action authorizes staff to engage architects or consultants to scope required mechanical work and provide budget estimates before any construction contract is brought back to the board.
