Council rejects consolidation of committee meetings; opts to keep status quo through year

Administrator Broyles presented staff recommendations to consolidate recurring committee meetings into two standing full council meetings per month (first and third meetings) and to eliminate recurring committee meeting schedules unless the council president or chairs called special committee meetings. Proponents argued earlier start times and consolidated agendas could be more efficient and family‑friendly.

Councilmember Chesak moved to start full council meetings on Tuesdays at 6:00 and fold committee work into the full meeting; that motion failed on a roll call. An alternate motion to begin meeting at 6:30 on Mondays and reduce committee structure was also considered; after additional motions and votes, Councilmember Johnson moved that the city "take no action and maintain the status quo through the end of the calendar year," and that motion passed (6–1).

Opponents said consolidation would centralize agenda control with the council president, reduce committee‑level expertise (especially for finance) and could lengthen meetings; supporters said consolidation might reduce duplicated presentation time and be easier for families and staff scheduling. Council directed staff to bring back a narrower proposal (start time of 6:30) for consideration at the second August meeting, but then ultimately voted to maintain the current structure through year-end.
