The Landmarks Commission voted to approve a Certificate of Appropriateness (COA) for work at 242 North Hartwell in the McCall Street Historic District, permitting completion of copper gutter lining that staff said will be soldered for greater longevity than the previous caulked aluminum liner.
Charlie described the house as the Michael and Jane McCoy House (built 1928, Prairie style) and said the commission had approved a partial installation last year; the current request covers the remaining exterior gutters (about 133 feet) to complete the work. Applicant Jim Mathey, who identified himself at the meeting, said contractors could not source matching historic shingles and explained repair choices. Mathey told the commission, “We had the first winter where we really didn't have any icicles at all,” crediting the copper work for improved performance.
A commission member moved to approve the COA as presented; the motion passed on a voice vote. Members discussed and agreed the applicant could be placed in the grant queue once the city confirms paint-and-repair funding so Mathey would not have to return for a new hearing if the COA is already granted.
