Prairie County cancels June primary for several unopposed county offices

Prairie County commissioners adopted Resolution 2026‑21 on March 11 to cancel the June primary for several county offices with unopposed candidates and to place the qualified candidates directly onto the Nov. 3, 2026 general ballot.
The resolution, introduced during the meeting, cited Montana code (13‑1‑403) that permits cancellation of a primary when the number of candidates equals or is fewer than the positions to be filled. The county election administrator (as recorded in the minutes) had provided a letter notifying the board that the following offices were unopposed: sheriff, coroner, county attorney, public administrator, treasurer, superintendent of schools and justice of the peace. Commissioners moved, seconded and voted to adopt the resolution; the motion passed.
The action removes those specific local races from the June ballot and directs election staff to treat the candidates as qualified for the November general election. The change is procedural and follows the state code cited in the resolution.
