District reports strong extracurricular participation but low family survey response

Assistant Superintendent Tina Wortman said family and community engagement remained strong across the year with increased extracurricular and co-curricular opportunities, but noted survey participation was limited.
Wortman reported an increase from 570 to 617 district opportunities this year, with 86% of students (11,409) participating in at least one club or activity. She said elementary participation reached 96% (5,862 students), middle schools 93% (2,693), and high schools 66% (2,854). Wortman also noted the district recorded 237 distinct community partnerships (an increase of 31) and that Beach Grove Elementary and Fort Wright Elementary had submitted family-friendly certification applications.
At the same time, Wortman said the district’s family survey had low participation — "only 8% of our Kent County School District families responding" — and outlined next steps including principals reviewing school-specific results, strengthening two-way communication and continuing flexible engagement options. The district plans a district-level family-friendly certification application and will continue expanding attendance-improvement initiatives aimed at the 96.25% attendance goal.
