Commission OKs pergola restoration and pathway replacement at Körner's Folly

The Forsyth County Historic Resources Commission approved COA2026-048 on June 3 to restore a deteriorated pergola and replace a concrete pathway at Körner's Folly, a Local Historic Landmark at 413 South Main Street in Kernersville. Michelle McCullough described the project as returning the pergola to its documented 1887 appearance and restoring the masonry piers using a bespoke "Körner's Folly Mix" brick previously produced by General Shale.
Key elements include removing and repairing deteriorated wood columns with Dutchman repairs or full replacement in period-appropriate species and finishes; increasing the pergola height to approximately eight feet by adding about two feet of masonry to each pier based on archival documentation; replacing a deteriorated metal roof with a new standing-seam metal roof; repairing decorative fish-scale shingles, entablature, cornice, and the barrel vault; and replacing a 70-foot poured-concrete walkway with slate stepping stones laid along the pergola axis. Executive Director Suzanna Ritz Malliett appeared in support of the application. The Commission approved the COA with conditions requiring permits, staff review of deviations, and submission of photo documentation within ten days of completion.
Vice-Chair W. Noah Reynolds presided over the case while two commissioners were recused. The vote to approve was unanimous among participating members.
