The applicant proposed two Virginia cedar signs with painted, engraved letters—one mounted on existing wrought iron hooks south of the front entrance (29.5 inches by 16.5 inches) and a second at the basement entrance (16 inches by 12 inches) installed at the previous sign’s location. Staff found the signs compatible with the district in material, scale, and typeface, noting the font was based on an early-19th-century map of Salem. The Commission approved the COA with conditions that the front sign hardware be installed into mortar joints, the basement sign be installed in the prior mounting location, the signs be removed if the space remains unoccupied for more than 180 days, required permits be obtained, staff review any minor revisions, and the applicant submit photo documentation within ten days of completion.
The vote was unanimous. There was no public comment on the item.
