Town examines cemetery ownership after dispute over tree removal; research and possible resolution requested

Council members discussed at length whether the town owns several small cemeteries after a resident complaint about tree removal adjacent to the Hulberton Road cemetery. Councilperson Neil Valentine relayed a complaint from Tony Sniatecki that trees had been taken down next to the cemetery and urged cleanup; Highway/Water Superintendent Dirk Lammes said he had been told by a contact in Albany that the parcel is privately owned and the town has no authority to work on it.
Councilperson Elaine Berg asked that Albany provide written confirmation of ownership, and Louise Passarell agreed to research ownership records for other cemeteries. Berg reminded the board that cemeteries must file paperwork with Albany to be dedicated to the Town before the town assumes responsibility; Lammes said Cornell advised having a resolution authorizing any town spending on cemetery work. No new maintenance spending resolution was adopted at this meeting.
