Town discusses burst meter billing and seeks bulk purchase to finish District 6 meters

Highway/Water Superintendent Dirk Lammes told the Town of Murray board that a water meter at a Route 31 residence froze and burst after the house became vacant; the property’s owner had been billed only the minimum charge since a 2023 ownership change. Lammes said he spoke with the owner at the time service was shut off, that he will research the extent of the water loss and bill the owner for estimated usage, and that going forward he will require shut-off requests in writing.
Lammes also told the board he would like to complete meter replacements in District #6 (about 38 remaining) and asked for a resolution to purchase meters; he said buying 100 meters would yield a discount. Supervisor Gerry Rightmyer and Councilperson Neil Valentine expressed support so long as accounting confirmed sufficient funds, and Councilperson Elaine Berg said completing District 6 would allow the town to evaluate the new meters’ performance.
