Port of Port Orford commissioners and staff spent the Sept. 23, 2025, workshop reviewing an application for an Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) variance and the port’s safety practices. The meeting began at 10:17 a.m. and adjourned at 12:17 p.m.
Port Administrator Catherine Scobby told the commission that staff are optimistic following discussions with both state and federal OSHA teams and stressed the need for formal, documented safety procedures to show compliance. The discussion covered which jurisdiction would apply to specific activities, the port’s past variances, employee safety protocols, and engineering standards for vessel lift points.
Commissioners Aaron Ashdown (vice president), Pat Cox (secretary/treasurer) and Scott Mecum participated in the discussion alongside staff including Communications Coordinator Faith Townsend and Port employee Darin Farris. The commission and staff agreed to strengthen the port’s Facility Use Agreement, implement new safety management practices, and develop written procedures that include engineering standards for vessel lift points; the minutes record that the group will continue pursuing the OSHA variance to ensure safe operations.
The workshop minutes do not record a formal roll-call motion or vote on these directions. The meeting record notes no potential conflicts of interest were declared. The commission confirmed its next meeting for Oct. 21, 2025, at 6:00 p.m., at which staff are likely to report progress on the variance application and revised Facility Use Agreement.
