Nick Borderlon (F/V Lacie Belle) specifically urged a 24-hour-readily available forklift to maintain competitiveness for local fishers.
In the commission’s action-item discussion, staff presented competing installation proposals from the Port Orford Seafood Market Fishermen's Cooperative and Pacific Dream. Commissioners debated private versus public hoists, equitable access for fishers, liability exposures and insurance coverage but took no formal action. The record shows the commission deferred any decision until legal counsel and the insurers complete a review of proposed partnerships and liability arrangements.
Commissioner Scott Mecum separately reported investigation results on hoist equipment, noting a luffing crane would require a hydraulic ram. The commission added “legal review of public/private hoist partnerships” and an “ice provision strategy” to future agendas and tasked staff with additional information gathering. The meeting adjourned at 10:42 PM; the next regular meeting is set for Sept. 16 at 6:00 PM.
