City advances OptiCom GPS preemption project to speed emergency response

Winter Park staff described the OptiCom GPS preemption project funded through a HUD grant, which will provide signal preemption for emergency vehicles and enable transit signal priority; six intersections are complete and several remain under construction.
Staff (S14) reported that the OptiCom GPS traffic-signal preemption project, funded in part by a 2023 HUD grant, has completed installation at six intersections and is under construction at Fairbanks & Pennsylvania and other locations. The system sends GPS location and heading data from emergency vehicles to a cabinet-based preemption controller to safely transition signals, clear intersections and improve response times.
Staff noted the project will improve emergency response and regional interoperability, and may enable transit signal priority in the future. The remaining intersections will be completed, followed by a safety building complex system test by the fire department to validate operations.
