Consultants present State Road 426 safety audit; staff to seek FDOT coordination

VHB presented a road-safety audit for State Road 426 (Fairbanks Avenue) that identifies narrow sidewalks, short crossing times, ADA deficiencies and other crash risks; the firm recommended corridor-level operational work and a phasing plan, with a final report targeted for July 31.
VHB's planning and design director (S13) told the Transportation Advisory Board that State Road 426/Fairbanks Avenue is a two-mile corridor on the city's high-injury network and a primary target for Vision Zero countermeasures. The consultant said the audit combined field review, a speed study, a night assessment and public outreach and identified corridor-level recommendations including an operational signal-timing study, an access-management plan and prioritized sidewalk and pedestrian improvements.
The consultant walked the board through site-specific proposals: medians and gateway elements to support reduced posted speeds, raised intersections at Park and New York avenues, tightened curb radii at problematic driveways and added bike-lane end signage and shared-use paths in constrained corridors. "It's one of the high injury networks on the city's Vision 0 Action Plan," the consultant said, noting the audit is intended to help the city pursue funding and implementation. VHB said it will finalize technical drawings after DOT and city review and expects to issue a final report with cost estimates and a phasing plan by July 31.
