State senator presents $1 million for Westside stormwater work

New Smyrna Beach received a $1,000,000 state payment on Tuesday aimed at moving forward stormwater improvements in the city's historic Westside neighborhood. Mayor Cleveland and City Manager Cowper joined State Sen. Tom Wright at the dais for brief remarks and a ceremonial check presentation.
Speaking to the commission, Sen. Tom Wright said the funding is intended to protect homes and strengthen the community's resilience. "So tonight we're here to provide you with a check for the historic Westside neighborhood in the amount of $1,000,000," he said. City officials said the funds will support design and early construction activities coordinated with city engineering and county partners. The city manager characterized the Westside effort as part of a larger program of work that officials estimate will require substantially more funding as design advances.
The commission thanked the senator and directed staff to continue coordination with Volusia County and the selected consultants. The project was repeatedly framed by officials as part of long-term stormwater upgrades for underserved areas of New Smyrna Beach.
