Superintendent details free summer meals, backpack drive and school reassignments

Dr. Williams, the newly sworn superintendent, told the Wilson County Board of Education that free summer meals for children 18 and younger are being served Monday through Thursday at Margaret Hearn, Lucom, Vick, Vincent Bonham and Wells elementary schools and along several mobile routes through Aug. 13. "The number of meals being served per day has almost doubled since last summer. We are averaging 1,627 breakfast meals daily and 1,916 lunches daily," he said, and thanked the school nutrition staff and community for supporting the program.
Dr. Williams also announced the district's Operation Backpack collection and distribution, now in its 15th year, and encouraged donations through the district website or by contacting Amber Lynch. He outlined current reassignment caps (Lucaume, New Hope, Rock Ridge, Vincent Bonham; Frederick Douglass Elementary grades for Spanish immersion and select non‑immersion grades; Elm City and Springfield middle schools for 6th and 7th grades) and confirmed the early college start date of Aug. 5 and the traditional student start date of Aug. 24.
