The Port Commission voted to approve a permit for the 2026 California International Airshow at Smith Municipal Airport following a presentation by the event's new executive director.
"This year, headlining for the Salinas Air Show will be the Air Force Thunderbirds," Christine Ware, executive director of the California International Airshow, told commissioners as she outlined the Sept. 25–27 schedule and performers. After questions and discussion, a motion to approve the permit was made, seconded and carried with four ayes and two commissioners absent.
Commissioners raised operational and safety questions during the presentation; staff and the presenter emphasized coordination with airport operations and FAA notification where needed. The permit vote followed a formal motion: "I'd like to motion that we approve permit for the Salinas, California International Airshow," after which the clerk recorded ayes from the commissioners present and the motion carried.
