The Common Council recognized a local resident with the Waukesha Police Department's Citizen Service Award for intervening to assist an officer during an assault on Jan. 23, 2025.
According to the award citation read at the meeting, squads were dispatched to a disorderly conduct complaint in the 300 block of Commerce Street; the suspect threatened the caller and later assaulted Officer Goodnature. The award states the citizen followed the suspect at a safe distance, provided updated locations, and then intervened when the suspect assaulted the officer, holding the suspect in a bear hug until other officers could stabilize and handcuff him. The citation in the packet was signed by Daniel P. Thompson, chief of police.
At the dais, an officer praised the recipient's actions, saying the citizen "actually demonstrated courage" and that the department wanted to recognize those who help officers in the community. The award recipient addressed council members, saying he would "do it again in a heartbeat," and thanked the department for its work.
