The United Nations spokesperson relayed a warning from the World Food Programme that food assistance for more than 130,000 refugees in Burundi could be reduced unless urgent funding arrives. The spokesperson said WFP "urgently needs $35,000,000 to sustain food and nutrition support for refugees through August of next year."
The briefing warned that without new resources, life‑saving food distribution would end "entirely in October." The spokesperson linked the shortfall partly to renewed displacement from violence in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which the briefing said has forced more than 100,000 people into Burundi and more than doubled the number of refugees WFP supports there.
The spokesperson appealed for urgent contributions and highlighted the broader risk that remaining assistance could be drawn down without prompt funding.
