District presents updated wellness policy; first reading cites federal requirements and new snack restrictions

The presentation enumerated several concrete policy changes: aligning language to national standards and New York State laws around nutrition, adding language to exclude certain food dyes from offerings, adding clearer guidance for fundraising during school hours to comply with child nutrition laws, and explicitly adding "no bake sales during school hours." The presenter also noted that Smart Snack standards (set by the United States Department of Agriculture and the New York State Education Department) were added and linked in the policy for staff reference.
The wellness coordinator said the district will post the full updated policy on the district website and expanded the policy's procedural language to establish goals for membership, development, implementation and review of the wellness policy. They also said the district must meet four times a year for the wellness committee and intends to recruit students, parents and community members for participation.
Board members thanked the presenter and raised a concern they would like codified: that recess not be used as a group punishment. A board member asked the policy to clarify that physical activity and recess be protected and not removed from whole groups as a disciplinary technique.
The policy was taken as a first reading; no final vote was recorded at this meeting.
