Putney Gun Club seeks temporary municipal tax exemption; Selectboard requests site visit and more information

Representatives of the Putney Gun Club asked the Selectboard for a municipal tax exemption extension to allow continued improvements and community use; board members requested a site visit and additional information before any vote at Town Meeting.
Dan Deitz, president of the Putney Gun Club, told the Selectboard the club still uses its building for shooting but membership has dwindled since COVID and the club no longer has a gun safety instructor. Deitz asked whether the exemption could be granted for another year or two to allow the club to make improvements and make the building more accessible to community use.
Vice president Josh Emond said the club has opened the building for meetings and community events and that the facility is heated and the well is on the property. Selectboard members asked why the property should be exempt from municipal tax rolls and what would happen if it became taxable; the Town Manager recommended a site visit and additional information be provided before the matter appears on the Town Meeting ballot.
