The Putney Selectboard unanimously adopted a resolution at its Jan. 21 meeting expressing support for Vermont Secretary of State Sarah Copeland Hanzas's refusal to turn over the state's complete voter checklist to the federal government. Selectboard member Aileen Tulloch read the resolution and moved its adoption; Peg Alden seconded the motion and it passed.
The resolution cites Vermont law (17 V.S.A. §2154) prohibiting the sharing of nonpublic voter information and references Article I, Section 4 of the U.S. Constitution, which assigns states authority over elections. The resolution states that the board supports the Secretary of State "in refusing to turn over the voter checklists, thus following Vermont law and protecting the privacy of our residents."
