Selectboard agrees to fly Pan-African flag for Black History Month

The Equity & Inclusion Advisory Committee requested the Pan-African flag be flown Feb. 5–28, 2026; the board approved the request at its Feb. 4 meeting. EIAC member Lisa Chase read a Black History Month statement in support of the recognition.
The Putney Selectboard approved a request from the Equity & Inclusion Advisory Committee to fly the Pan-African flag at Town Hall and the Fire Station from Feb. 5–28, 2026, in observance of Black History Month. Corin "Swift Everdy" Kennedy-Spielman made the request on behalf of the committee and the board voted in favor on a motion by Peg Alden, seconded by Fletcher Proctor.
Lisa Chase of the EIAC read the committee's Black History Month statement during the meeting packet presentation, noting the theme for 2026 and describing the flag's role: "The Pan African flag is a flag that has been used to represent the pride and resilience of Black people in America and in the African Diaspora world wide and to bring a unity to their stories and history." The board did not attach conditions to the flag request and did not record alternative dates.
