FGCU committee reviews renaming of Instructional Design master's program

Provost Debbie Thorne told trustees the M.A. in Instructional Design & Educational Technology would be renamed Learning Design and Technology to refocus on learning design; course content is expected to remain largely unchanged though some courses will evolve with the field.
Provost Debbie Thorne told the committee the Master's degree in Instructional Design and Educational Technology is proposed to be renamed a Master's in Learning Design and Technology to emphasize a shift from "instructional or teaching design" toward learning design. "It may seem like a subtle shift, but the name change focused the program on learning design rather than instructional or teaching design," Thorne said.
Trustees asked whether course content would change. Thorne said the change was primarily nomenclature and that some courses might continue to evolve, especially in rapidly changing fields such as educational technology. The item was presented for information; additional curriculum updates would be included in any later program proposals.
