FGCU committee hears proposal for two new College of Education master's programs

Provost Debbie Thorne told the Academic/Student/Faculty Affairs Committee that Florida Gulf Coast University is developing two new master's degree programs in the College of Education: a Master's in Learning Sciences & Analytics and a Master's in Higher Education Student Affairs Administration. "Both programs qualified as programs of strategic emphasis (PSE)," Thorne said, noting that PSE designation aligns the programs with state workforce priorities and the State University System's strategic plan.
Trustee Derek Lura asked about likely enrollment and faculty support. Thorne said the university had not completed enrollment projections for the full program term and that "the first year projection would likely remain steady with an increase in years three through five." She added that faculty allocations would be determined during curriculum review and that the college dean understood that resource needs should be addressed when programs advance for formal approval.
The committee treated the item as information; no vote was required. Chair Robbie Roepstorff and other trustees emphasized the importance of aligning new academic offerings with regional economic needs and noted that final proposals will include curriculum details and resource plans before being forwarded to the full Board.
