Washoe County parks highlight volunteer partnerships, UNR geology hikes and stargazing events

Rangers outlined several community partnerships that expand program offerings across county parks. Bob Holland described the Washoe Rocks geology hikes, which connect county parks with University of Nevada, Reno geologists, and the county's collaboration with the Astronomical Society of Nevada for stargazing events; Holland said the astronomy group recently received a donated, trailer-mounted telescope.
Andy Brown emphasized volunteers and partners such as Master Gardeners at Rancho Center and the Great Basin Institute at the Galena visitor center. He said many interpretive programs are donation-supported rather than funded from the county general budget: "The county doesn't provide the budget for us to put on these interpretive programs," Brown said, explaining that community contributions allow ranger walks, campfire programs and summer music series to continue.
