Sheriff seeks county approval to apply for STEP traffic-enforcement grant to fund overtime patrols

Sheriff Guy Baker told the court he is requesting permission to apply for a FY2027 Strategic Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) grant to pay overtime for additional officers during high-risk periods such as July 4 and New Year's. "Last year, we had over 450 major accidents that had fatalities... and that puts us at a high risk county," Baker said, noting intoxicated drivers were a leading factor.
Baker said the grant covers overtime and that, if awarded, the sheriff's office will return to certify acceptance. Commissioners approved the request to apply and asked Baker to follow up with certification steps if the grant is awarded.
