Anne Marie Torres, Prairie View A&M extension agent for Jim Wells County, read a proclamation recognizing Prairie View A&M University's 150th anniversary and recounted the university's origins, mission, and growth. The proclamation noted the institution's founding in the Texas Constitution of 1876, its early student body, and its designation within the Texas A&M University System.
Torres said the university currently enrolls more than 10,000 students and is expanding extension services across counties. The court accepted the proclamation and offered congratulations; members asked about the university's location and Torres said Prairie View is about 45 minutes west of Houston.
