County extension agent briefs court on New World screw worm, offers Spanish webinar for cattle producers

Rogelio Mercado, Jim Wells County extension agent, told the commissioners that the New World screw worm has produced 42 confirmed U.S. cases since June 3, 41 of them in Texas, with 11 currently active and 31 inactive. "The closest two cases that we've seen are in Jim Hogg ... and there is now an active case in Starr County in Roma," Mercado said, and added that local response efforts appear to be effective.
Mercado said the extension is hosting a Thursday webinar, delivered in Spanish, focused on cattle management under the new screw worm threat and invited Spanish-only speakers to participate by scanning a QR code he provided. He said he will be one of four speakers and urged producers to attend, saying the county's outreach and monitoring over the past 45 days indicate the situation is being contained in nearby areas.
