District opens expanded Environmental Education lab to serve thousands of elementary students

Administrators presented the district’s new environmental education facility — the Esteem (Environmental Science, Technology, Engineering, Expression and Math) program and the Yacim Lab — as a permanent, hands-on resource for elementary students. Catherine (speaker 13) described the facility as a central hub that lets students move between classroom lessons and outdoor field experiences throughout the school year.
“This facility represents a continued investment in hands on, real world learning opportunities for the Auburn Washburn students,” Catherine said, noting environmental education has been in the district since 1993. The presenter said kindergarten through sixth-grade students will visit the lab multiple times per year and estimated the program will serve close to 3,000 students. Board members asked about acreage and logistics; Catherine said the site includes just over 50 acres of mixed prairie, a large pond and forested areas and emphasized partnerships with teachers and community volunteers.
