District honors drivers after state and national bus-safety finishes

Auburn Washburn recognized four transportation employees for top finishes in the state bus driver safety competition; Stephanie Johns advanced to nationals in Austin and placed third in the conventional big-bus event and fifth overall.
The Board of Education recognized district transportation staff and student competitors for placements at the state and national bus driver safety competitions. Andrew Steenbock, identified in the meeting as the district transportation supervisor, said the district team finished third at the Kansas state meet and that one driver, Stephanie Johns, advanced to the national competition.
“As a team, they finished 3rd in the whole state,” Steenbock said, adding that Stephanie Johns “finished 2nd overall in the whole state of...the big buses” at state and later placed third in the conventional big-bus event at nationals in Austin and fifth overall. Steenbock also thanked a last-minute team member, Diane Collins, for stepping in and enabling the team recognition.
Board members asked for details about the competition format and safety elements; a staff member described the course as a safety obstacle course that includes student-loading scenarios, railroad simulations, parallel parking and diminishing clearance lanes. The board applauded the employees’ performance and posed briefly about training and safety standards for district drivers.
