Parents urge GGUSD to support volunteers and address student screen time

During the public-comment portion of the meeting, two residents urged the district to support parent volunteers and to take a more proactive approach to student digital wellness.
Charlene Cuellar, who identified herself as a Garden Grove resident and legislative advocacy chair for the Garden Grove Unified Council of PTAs, celebrated the transition of parent leaders across the district and stressed the role volunteers play in building school culture. "July 1 is the beginning of our parent teacher association years," she said, noting that parent leaders at the district’s 28 site associations are preparing programming for the coming year.
Nicholas Dibbs, who said he has been advising the board since 2018, urged stronger district action on student screen time and recommended programs other districts have used, including HOPE Squad and the Screenagers curriculum. "We are providing our children with remarkably little guidance on the use on their use of technology," Dibbs said, referencing Surgeon General advisories and local examples from neighboring districts.
Trustees acknowledged the comments during the meeting; no formal board action was taken in response during the session.
