City staff proposed increasing the municipal court administrative fee to cover recurring technology and staffing costs associated with higher court activity.
Chief Jeff Short said investments in a digital ticketing platform (DigiTicket) and a new records management system increased recurring costs and led to more people appearing in court. "What staff is recommending is that we increase that to a $90 fee to cover the reoccurring costs associated to the investments for technology and for personnel to provide a safe environment for our staff and patrons," Short said. He explained part of the existing fee supports statutorily required administrative functions and that the increase would help offset overtime and dedicated court security.
Council members expressed support for improving safety and for the efficiency gains from digital ticketing. One council member noted a portion of the fee ($22.50) goes to the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center. City staff said they would update the schedule of fees by resolution and place the item on the consent agenda for the next meeting.
No final vote to adopt the fee was recorded during this meeting; staff sought direction to return the change as a resolution on the consent agenda.
