Basehor approves 8% transient guest tax in charter ordinance

Assistant Director of Planning and Zoning Alex van Dyke presented Charter Ordinance 33, recommending an 8% transient guest tax consistent with regional practice. "Based off that work session, staff recommends transient guest tax being implemented at 8%," van Dyke said, and explained the tax applies to guests staying 28 days or less and is typically collected by the Kansas Department of Revenue.
Van Dyke told the council short-term rental rules will be considered in a separate ordinance at a later date. Council member Sherry moved approval of the charter ordinance; the motion was seconded and the governing body approved the ordinance on a recorded 5-0 vote. Staff noted the charter ordinance requires the vote of the entire governing body, including the mayor.
