Basehor council approves first Citizens Academy to boost civic engagement

The Basehor City Council on March 11 unanimously adopted Resolution 2026-03 to establish the city's first Citizens Academy, a multi-session program that staff described as a mix of presentations, workshops and site visits to departments including police and municipal services. "It is my honor to formally introduce you to Olivia Ortiz," Deputy City Administrator Maddie Mountain said of the staff member who will help run the program.
Staff told the council the idea grew from outreach conducted during last year's sales tax process and the packet includes a draft rubric and nomination process. For the first year, staff will accept nominations from the city administrator, the governing body and the planning commission; graduates will be allowed to nominate future participants. Council member Sherry moved approval; the motion was seconded and the ordinance passed on a 5-0 vote. Staff said it will implement the academy and return with details on timing and the nomination schedule.
