WSAC spotlights credit for prior learning, Elevate partnership and apprenticeship-degree pathways

David Davis and Hannah Lodwick presented on Academic Credit for Prior Learning (ACPL) as a strategy to recognize prior learning and move students more quickly into career pathways. Presenters emphasized ACPL’s role in connecting work experience and learning to postsecondary credential attainment.
Members of the Elevate partnership (Rachel Strachan, Russell Dorsey, Tania Siler and Lily Istrate) shared survey work with students and community partners that identified barriers and opportunities; the presentation highlighted articulation agreements with organizations such as Goodwill and Volunteers of America. Shana Peschek of the Machinist Institute described a collaboration with Renton Technical College to integrate apprenticeship training and higher education so that participants can earn both a degree and a journey card simultaneously.
Presenters said these approaches—portfolio-based credit, formal articulation agreements, and integrated apprenticeship-degree pathways—can reduce time and cost for adult learners and better align training with employer needs.
