Selectboard authorizes application for VTrans emergency grant after Route 132 storm damage

The Town of Sharon Selectboard on June 15 authorized Town Administrator Nicola Shipman to submit a VTrans Emergency Grant application after Highway Supervisor Allen Wight reported storm damage to Route 132 that has undermined the pavement edge and compromised the subbase.
Wight described localized heavy rain on June 10 and again June 14–15 that caused “edge washing along several hundred feet of the paving” and identified Culvert 48 as undersized for current flows; he said District 4 staff advised that because the culvert did not fail, it is not automatically eligible for emergency grant funding. Shipman said she believes the town will meet the minimal damages threshold based on her conversation with District 4 and that the Town has secured temporary lights so the road can remain open as a single lane while repairs are planned.
The authorization to submit the grant application passed unanimously. The Selectboard also discussed short-term stabilization measures and paused nonessential grant-funded work on Beaver Meadow Road to prioritize Route 132 repairs. No construction schedule was adopted at the meeting; Shipman said an agreement with VTrans is required before work covered by the Class 2 resurfacing grant can begin.
