Chief R. Litwin warns of $1.3M truck and $175,000 repair for aging engines

Chief R. Litwin, a guest speaker at the April 9 Board of Fire Commissioners & EMS meeting, reported that Engine 35 (2001) is scheduled for replacement in 2028–29 and that Engine 36 (2009) has developed "rust jacking" on its frame that will require an approximately $175,000 body-off-frame repair. He told the commission that a new front-line fire truck is currently estimated at about $1,300,000 and warned that inflation and 2–3 year apparatus lead times make near-term decisions critical to meet capital-planning deadlines.
Commissioners discussed the timing and budget implications; Chairman John Campbell suggested meeting with the First Selectman and a member of the Board of Finance. Commissioner Jon Torrant moved to arrange a June meeting with the Board of Selectmen and Board of Finance to discuss Engines 35 and 36; Commissioner Michael Castelli seconded and the motion passed unanimously. Commissioners were told a proposal would need to be prepared for the Capital process by September.
