Mayor Lynn Burton addressed the board during public comment to outline recent progress negotiating with the Department of Natural Resources over a parcel described as "South of 182." Burton said DNR initially wanted to handle cultural surveys internally but has "now agreed to allow the city to pursue it." She said the city has secured interest from at least two buyers and a large developer that may buy the entire parcel.
Burton said one developer included a condition that it would "donate 5.9 acres to the school district" if it purchased the land. She also said the city has secured water and sewer access near the site, and developers discussed expanding a sewer line to 30 inches to support larger development. Burton estimated the DNR parcel could yield "anywhere from 900 to 1,000 homes" and cited nearby projects of about "205 to 210 homes" and smaller projects such as a planned 35-home "Bettner" development.
"They showed up, had their engineers with them, all their property people, their senior management," Burton said of the interested developer. She also said she would encourage the Yakama Nation to take part in a cultural survey to increase credibility with other tribes, while noting the city does not yet know locations or details of any potentially culturally significant areas because DNR has not shared them.
