Town warns of salt shortage; staff rationing and contingency planning underway

Town staff told the Select Board the municipal garage is short on road salt and that contracted deliveries from the supplier have been disrupted by regional supply-chain problems. "We currently have about 30 tons of of salts remaining in our shed," staff said, noting the town typically uses about 4 tons per salting run and that the current stock provides roughly seven runs at that usage rate.
Staff said they have contacted the supplier (Cargill) and are rationing salt while mixing it with sand when appropriate; replacing supplies from out-of-area vendors could raise costs significantly (staff cited an estimate of $300–$400 per ton versus the contracted $98/ton). The board asked staff to monitor deliveries closely and to call an emergency meeting if supply does not arrive soon.
