Haslett board adopts resolution to return Academic Way parcel to Catholic Diocese of Lansing

At its July 20 meeting the Haslett Board of Education voted to authorize Superintendent Malley to transfer the deed for a parcel on Academic Way back to the Catholic Diocese of Lansing.
"I will move that we adopt the resolution to authorize the superintendent to transfer the property back," a board member said before the motion was seconded and the board voted in favor. Superintendent Malley had told the board that the diocese made the land available in 1991 for community athletic fields under an arrangement that provided the property be returned to the diocese. Malley said school athletic programs are housed at Hazlett High School and will not be affected, but the fields have been used primarily by local clubs and township youth programs.
During discussion one board member stated that the district had sought legal advice and been advised to return the property because options were limited. After discussion the board voted to adopt the resolution; the motion passed with no recorded opposition.
Malley said the district will communicate with affected organizations and provided a contact number for the diocese (5173422440) for questions about plans for the property. The resolution was listed as attachment A in the meeting packet and the board directed the superintendent to take the steps necessary to complete the transfer.
