City and school district propose student-built ‘play town’ at Basehor City Park

Teachers and city staff outlined a partnership to build a student-designed and constructed "play town" at Basehor City Park using the Innovation Academy’s geometry and construction curriculum.
Amanda Riley, director of innovative programs, and teachers Kelly Kelly and Megan Little described the multi-year class project in which students build playhouses and learn industry-standard processes. Little said students have entered and won regional competitions and that the program teaches practical skills such as 16-inch-on-center framing and tool use; proceeds from past builds were used to buy materials and tools. The city requested general consensus rather than formal approval; councilmembers voiced strong support and encouraged integrating the project into parks programming. Staff and teachers plan to continue coordination and development of the build schedule and maintenance plan.
Council commented that the program provides hands-on learning and helps meet local workforce needs; staff thanked the teachers and said they would proceed with coordination and next steps.
