VTrans confirms scoping in 2027; bridge targeted to open to traffic in fall 2028

Royalton’s select board held a special public meeting to update residents on the Fox Stand Bridge. Nel, who led the update for the board, said the town received written confirmation from VTrans that the project will be advanced for scoping in 2027 and the bridge is targeted to open for traffic in the fall of 2028.
"We were given the promise, and the in writing, as you suggested, Susan, from Jeremy Reed at VTrans that he is going to be able to open for traffic in the fall of '28," Nel said. The reading of the VTrans note was followed by Sen. Becca White’s explanation of the state funding context and remaining conditions.
Sen. White, vice chair of the Senate Transportation Committee, cautioned that the timeline depends on required steps and the state’s budget. "We still need to clear our NEPA and ROE," she said, referring to environmental review and right-of-way clearances, and added that if federal or state funding changed the project could be pushed out.
The written VTrans message read at the meeting said the department believes the schedule is relatively low risk but reiterated that changes in funding at either level could jeopardize the timeline. Town officials told the public they would continue to press for placement in the transportation bill and monitor inclusion in the state project "white book."
