The Ashley Community Forest Board voted July 17 to accept $14,250 that Vital Communities is holding on behalf of Ashley; the funds were originally a $15,000 gift to Vital Communities with a fee deducted, leaving $14,250 available for conservation uses. Annie Penfield moved to accept the funds and specified they be used for trail design, trail building, historical research, and potential curriculum development; Erik Skarsten seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
Michael Sacca and others discussed options for how to deploy the funds, and there was extended discussion and some disagreement among board members about deliverables and the scope of curriculum work. Named potential contributors for curriculum and education work included Meg Teachout, Steve Wilbanks and Simone Pile. The board discussed making materials suitable for the general public as well as for school use and referenced an in-progress Ashley website as a possible host for visitor information.
