The Kiona-Benton City School District board voted to table action on a proposed extension of Superintendent Peter Peterson's contract until the end of February or until the board's fourth member can be present. Speaker Peter Peterson explained that under his contract a decision or notice must be made before Feb. 1 or the agreement automatically extends for a year: "By not taking any action whatsoever, my contract will automatically extend as of February 1." The motion to table was moved and seconded and carried by voice vote.
Several newly elected board members said they preferred to wait until the absent member could participate. One board member argued the decision was premature given recent turnover: "I am new and I only speak for myself, but... it just doesn't to me, it seems like the discussion... should be deferred at least till the next meeting," and a fellow member moved to table the item to allow fuller discussion when all four board members are available. The board recorded the table motion as approved; the board directed staff to include the extension on a future consent agenda once a timeline is set.
