Unified Fire Authority reports recruitment progress and recent wildland deployments

Chief Brad Larson presented a staffing and deployment update to the Midvale City Council Sept. 3. He said 181 top recruitment candidates were invited to undergo the firefighter physical agility test; 154 were chosen to continue to interviews and the department expects to make job offers to 36 finalists. Training camp is scheduled to begin the first week of February, and Chief Larson said 6–12 top candidates already have offers to attend fall training.
Larson also described recent wildland activity and mutual‑aid deployments: the Wildland Division was assigned to incidents in Utah, Wyoming, Idaho and California and, on Aug. 7, an EMAC deployment sent personnel to the Park Fire in California. As an August safety message, Chief Larson emphasized fire safety for children: "nearly 300 children die each year from burn related injuries and another 100 thousand are admitted to a hospital for treatment of burn related injuries," and he urged adults to keep children away from fire sources and to teach Stop, Drop, and Roll. He directed listeners to the City website and social channels for more fire safety information.
