Port Orchard council narrows council-vacancy interview questions, confirms interview dates

Clerk Wallace told the council she had scheduled candidate interviews for the council vacancy on August 4 and 6, allotting 30 minutes per candidate, and reminded members that anything candidates provide to the council becomes public record. "I've communicated to the candidates that they have interviews on the 4th and the 6th... they have 30 minutes, and that they're going to be asked questions, and all the questions will be the same," Clerk Wallace said.
Councilmembers proposed and debated which questions to include. After discussion the group prioritized five topics for the interviews: (1) the duties and responsibilities of a city council member; (2) the skills and strengths the applicant brings; (3) how the applicant would manage growth; (4) what the applicant views as the most pressing issues for the city; and (5) the applicant's fiscal policy or approach to capital projects and utility rates. Members also discussed accommodations and fairness; Councilmember Dedmon raised concerns about neurodivergent candidates who may need questions in advance, while others noted the need for a consistent and transparent interview process.
