The City Commission of Big Rapids proclaimed July 25, 2026 as Arts and Health Day to recognize the role of arts and culture in the city’s economy, public health and civic engagement. Michelle, filling in for Mark Kipper, read a proclamation noting that arts participation "has shown to reduce depression and anxiety, improve physical health outcomes, reduce social isolation, and build strong community networks."
Representatives from several local groups—Artworks, Stage Amp, TPAC (the sculpture group), Tubebak and Voca Lyrica—were acknowledged and invited to the dais to accept the proclamation. A city official said the community’s arts scene is unusual for a town of about 7,000 residents and praised the groups’ contributions to volunteerism and local events. The mayor closed the segment by thanking the arts groups and arranging for photographs and copies of the proclamation to be sent to staff for distribution.
